Chiropractors specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions which are due to a mechanical dysfunction of the joints, especially the spine and the effects that dysfunction has upon the nervous system.

Chiropractors use their hands for the adjustments, McTimoney chiropractic is a gentle way of making these adjustments. Any restrictions of the joints can cause pain or discomfort.

McTimoney Chiropractic chiropractors adjust the joints, one at a time that cause the restrictions,  these can be found not only in the spine but also in the other joints that could be causing nerve irritation, giving the feeling of a "trapped nerve", sharp breath-taking pain on certain movements. The symptoms may be sharp pain, weakness, numbness, cold sensations, or deep ache.

What is a trapped nerve?

Nerves are fibres along which signals run to instruct the body for various functions. If you have a pinched or trapped nerve it can result in pain, which should not be ignored. Long term damage to the nerve may occur if these symptoms are left.
Nerves are most vulnerable at places in your body where they travel through narrow spaces but have little soft tissue to protect them. Nerve compression often occurs when the nerve is pressed between tissues such as Ligament, Tendon or Bone. This can result in sciatica with pain in the leg or foot, or tennis elbow or carpel tunnel if the nerve is pinched in or near to the neck.
If nerve compression lasts a long time, a protective barrier around the nerve may break down. Fluid may build up, which may cause swelling;  additional pressure or scarring.
Most people have pain as their only symptom but other signs such as weakness, tingling (pins and needles) or numbness are associated with a pinched nerve.
There are treatments available to resolve the condition. At Back2Back Complementary Healthcare in Sturminster Newton, McTimoney Chiropractic (which is very gentle) can release the any joints if the problem is caused by the nerve being pinched by the joint. If the nerve is being compressed by muscles that have tightened due to signals from the nerve telling them to do so, physical therapy, deep tissue massage and exercises specific to the problem can all help. All healing time can be reduced by the use of low level laser, getting you more comfortable and back to enjoying life faster.

On the first meeting the chiropractor will take details of your health, your reasons for coming to a chiropractic clinic,  then you will be asked to agree to a medical examination.

Chiropractic adjustments are relatively gentle manipulation of the joints. You may experience some minor short term discomfort in the days following treatment, but they will subside and are a natural response to your body responding to being adjusted.
